A Wonderland in Wimbledon
The rear garden of the former Coach House was frankly rather ordinary and uninspiring – laid to lawn with a few shrubs. The challenge was to create something striking, highlighting the stunning London Brickwork, whilst maximising the use of the modest space with the end result being wildlife friendly, incorporating water, wildflower meadows, stunning trees and several places to sit and ponder.
Designed by nicolawakefield.co.uk, sinuous circulation routes lead you around the garden, opening up a variety of vistas and places to admire the secluded outdoor space, albeit in the centre of Wimbledon.
The wild flowers, trees, instant hedging and water feature are a haven for wildlife. Finished, and described by others as ‘real gem,’ the garden gives no clue to the fact that all the materials, diggers and dumpers had to come through the clients study!
It gives us great pleasure to also see this garden in print, featured as it was in Country Homes and Interiors. In addition it was an award winner at the 2023 BALI National Landscape Awards.

A wonderful project in a unique setting, beautifully complimenting the house. A quick fly through gives you the sense of a very special scheme.

What the client said:
After we moved in, I had a vision of creating a new garden, sympathetic to nature and wildlife, whilst maintaining a softness to the rectangular shape by means of intersecting and flowing pathways and a simple elegant terrace. I envisioned environmentally friendly lawns as well as a pond with a rill. I was fortunate enough to work with Nicola Wakefield who brilliantly modified and translated my ideas into reality. Nicola suggested Rob Jones as the main contractor for the project and I must say that he and his team completed the job on time, extremely professionally and with great attention to detail. They were charming, polite and made sure that I was kept fully informed. Their execution was excellent, and the finished garden exceeded my expectations - moreover they were a pleasure to work with!
