A tremendous result

Designing and creating stunning gardens is much about recognising and solving problems. So when I saw this specimen Yew Tree looking so pale and with such a thin crown, she cried out for help so that she could once again take pride of place in the grounds of the 16th century Manor House.

Detective work unearthed that the lawn had been repeatedly scapled at her base, thus compromising the all important feeder roots that lie close to the surface. Meanwhile the ride on tractor had compacted the soil and over dosing of lawn fertilisers had killed off the all important mycorrhizal fungi that live within the trees roots and which mutually support and feed one another.

A program of decompaction using a sophisticated air spade with fungi being injected deep into the trees roots system and other measures were undertaken, to include covering the roots and removing the grass from beneath the tree and look 12 months later, her foliage is a glossy dark green with a far thicker canopy and none of the brown die back that blighted her before.
